We drive half an hour for about 20 km south of Shangri-La, passing , on the bank of the Serchu, which means Golden River. After that we will start driving along the river on a mountain dirt road for another hour or so, with good views of meadows and high snow mountains on both sides. We begin to hike through meadows with flowers in bloom throughout the year and continue heading into lush forests with the rocky Abuji range towering above. The trail also goes along a small brook that flows down from the Abuji Lake. After a steep climb for about 3 to 4 hours, we will find ourselves in front of the beautiful and sacred Abuji Lake; which is held sacred by both Tibetan and Naxi people. The trail to Abuji lake abounds in medical plants and herbs including the most nourishing Snow-Tea. In times of drought, monks from Sumtseling Monastery trek to Abuji to conduct raining-calling rituals for the local community. The descent is easier but steep. We are picked up by our vehicle later in the day below the mountain.
